Practice 06

Do the Small Thing

Quiet focus: Wisdom

Small unfinished tasks can quietly occupy more space in the mind than they deserve. Avoidance may come from exhaustion, uncertainty, fear, distraction, or the belief that beginning means we must finish everything.

Wisdom is not always a major decision. Sometimes it is recognizing the smallest useful action and doing only that.

Practice Invitation

Choose one task that can be completed—or meaningfully advanced—in a few minutes.

You might:

  • Wash one cup.
  • Fold a few clothes.
  • Take out the trash.
  • Answer one message.
  • Pay or schedule one bill.
  • Put away one tool.
  • Make one appointment.
  • Gather one piece of needed information.
  • Finish one tiny loose end.

Make the task smaller if necessary. “Clean the room” can become “clear the chair.” “Handle the paperwork” can become “open the envelope.”

Notice whether beginning changes the size of the task in your mind.

Stop after the one chosen action. Let one completed step be enough.

Optional Journal

What became lighter when I finally did one small thing?

Journaling is optional. The act itself is the practice.
