Practice 08
Stir Something New
Quiet focus: Creation and curiosity
Making food can be ordinary, creative, nourishing, frustrating, comforting, or all of these at once. It gives us a direct way to turn separate ingredients into something that did not exist before.
This practice is not about producing an impressive meal. It is about bringing attention and a little curiosity to an act you may normally rush through.
Practice Invitation
Choose one manageable act of preparing food or drink.
You might:
- Cook or bake something you have not tried before.
- Change one ingredient in something familiar.
- Try a spice, fruit, vegetable, or flavor you rarely use.
- Make tea or coffee slowly.
- Prepare a simple meal.
- Cut fruit and arrange it with care.
- Use a family recipe.
- Make something familiar with more attention than usual.
Notice the colors, smells, textures, sounds, and changes that happen as you work. If the result is imperfect, let experimentation remain part of the practice.
Stop when the simple thing you chose is prepared. Taste it with attention. Let making—not impressing—be enough.
Optional Journal
What did creating with my hands remind me of?
Journaling is optional. The act itself is the practice.
